Songs With Dwight Yoakam in the Lyrics

December 31st, 2010

Today, I bought tickets to see my 7th Dwight Yoakam concert. It inspired me to list the songs I know that feature Dwight in the lyrics – both of them. Here they are – enjoy!

I Feel Lucky
Performer Mary Chapin Carpenter
Composer Don Schlitz

Now eleven million later, I was sitting at the bar
I’d bought the house a double, and the waitress a new car
Dwight Yoakam’s in the corner, trying to catch my eye
Lyle Lovett’s right beside me with his hand upon my thigh
The moral of this story, it’s simple but it’s true
Hey the stars might lie, but the numbers never do

I feel lucky, oh oh oh, I feel lucky, yeah
Hey Dwight, hey Lyle, boys, you don’t have to fight
Hot dog, I’m feeling lucky tonight

. . . . .

When It Rains
Performer Gretchen Wilson
Composers Vicky McGehee, Gretchen Wilson, John Rich

When it rains, I pour, a couple more, rounds
‘Til the hurtin’ and the heartache start to drown
I turn out the light, I turn up Dwight
And I lock my door
When it rains, When it rains, I pour

Physical Therapy School Interview Questions

December 22nd, 2010

I recently went to my first physical therapy school interview and I really didn’t know what to expect. I haven’t heard the results yet, but here are my observations.

What to wear to a physical therapy school interview?
As a female, I wore a gray sweater, black dress pants, and black flats. All of the other interviewees (there were 14 other applicants) wore a black business suit with a conservative dress shirt underneath. The men wore ties. The women wore skirts and heels. If you want to look like everyone else at your physical therapy school interview, wear a suit. Wear comfortable shoes – we spent a half an hour standing in a cadaver lab and at least an hour on a walking tour of the facility.

What questions might be asked at a physical therapy school interview?
Our interviews were only 30 minutes of the full-day event. The interview included one faculty member, one second-year student, and one interviewee. The interview consisted of five behavioral interview questions. Each of us had five note cards and each note card had two questions from one of five categories. The categories were based on five professional skills that the school considers important for future physical therapists to have: Communication, Customer Service, Teamwork, Analytical Thinking, and Interpersonal Relationships. The interview consisted of one question from each category. My interview questions were:

Communication
Tell us about a time when listening was important.

Customer Service
Tell us about a time when you had to work with a difficult client.

Teamwork
Tell us about a time when you went above and beyond the call of duty to contribute to a group.

Analytical Thinking
Tell us about a time when a common-sense approach helped you solve a problem.

Interpersonal Relationships
Tell us about a time when you had to work with a person/people from a different background than yours.

I’d love to hear about your physical therapy school interview experiences. Good luck!

Zumba – Kicks like a workout, feels like a party

December 22nd, 2010

The Minneapolis – St. Paul, Minnesota Star Tribune recently published an article about Zumba.

University of Minnesota kinesiology professor, Beth Lewis was quoted as saying: “For someone who’s physically fit, probably going for a run is going to provide a better workout, but for people who work out rarely, this is a fabulous gateway exercise…”

I very much disagree with Ms. Lewis. Zumba is a great interval workout for people of all fitness levels, not only “people who work out rarely.” The Zumba format allows each individual to work as hard as they choose or as hard as they are able. Zumba recruits muscles from the entire body while challenging the cardiovascular system. Choreography may be difficult for some former athletes to pick up and therefore, some “physically fit” participants may need more time and practice to feel comfortable enough to work at a high intensity.

I have been a long-distance runner for over 15 years and I never saw the rapid results that I saw from Zumba from running. Since doing Zumba for the first time in March 2009, I personally have lost over 30 pounds. I consider myself well-conditioned and toned. I ran my best-ever Ragnar Relay race in the summer of 2010 after training by primarily leading Zumba classes.

I love seeing my participants smile and build confidence, spirit, and attitude through Zumba. Viva Zumba!
