Gearing up for World Cup 2014: Anderlecht Champions (Euro 2000 Ole Ole Mix)

June 4th, 2014

World Cup 2014 is almost here and I CAN’T WAIT!!!!!

I will be incorporating World Cup-related music into my Zumba classes all World Cup long (June 12 – July 13, 2014). The second song I’m including is from Zumba Fitness Mega Mix Volume 29: Anderlecht Champions Euro 2000 Ole Ole Mix by Eurostars. You will most definitely recognize the catchy lyrics: Ole Ole Ole Ole, We are the Champs, We are the Champs… Just try not to sing-a-long!

Zumba Fitness intended this song to be a warm up for Zumba instructors, but my choreography is quite the opposite. Using my dance team background, I choreographed a kickline routine for this song complete with fan kicks and Frenchy/Nelly/Can Can/hinge kicks. Of course, I give the options of low or high kicks to keep the choreography friendly for participants of all levels!

Here is a group from Macclesfield, UK who also used Anderlecht Champions (Euro 2000 Ole Ole Mix) as a kick routine for Zumba. Enjoy!

An Open Letter to the Zac Brown Band

August 26th, 2010

Dear Zac Brown Band,
If there was a clean version of Toes available to the public, I would use it in my Zumba classes.

Thank you,
Rencsi

I was looking for a fun end-of-summer song to add to my Zumba playlist and I decided on Toes by the Zac Brown Band. I had the choreography ready to go. All I needed was a clean version of the song…

No such luck – there isn’t one. The clean version made available to radio stations is not available to the public.

I’m all for free speech, but I can’t blast the word “ass” over a loud speaker system to a captive audience of all ages. So Toes is a no-go and I’m sad.

If You’re Travelin’ in the North Country Fair…

February 11th, 2009

Living in Minnesota, I enjoy the lyrics of Girl from the North Country. It is a tribute to Echo Helstrom, the girlfriend Bob Dylan left in Hibbing when he moved to pursue his music career in New York. The best version of this song is the Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan duet featured on The Essential Johnny Cash.

Girl from the North Country
by Bob Dylan

If you’re traveling in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
For she was once a true love of mine.

Please see from me that her hair’s hanging down
That it curls and falls all down her breast
Please see for me that her hair’s hanging down
That’s the way I remember her best.

Well, if you go when the snowflakes falls
When the rivers freeze and summer ends
Please see for me if she’s wearing a coat so warm
To keep her from the howlin’ winds.

If you’re travelin’ in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine.

Well, if you’re traveling in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Please say hello to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine.

What is the Christmas song about Maria and “the first nightingale’s song”?

December 19th, 2008

“The Gift” is one of my favorite Christmas songs about a girl named Maria who finds an injured bird and nurses it back to health.

“The Gift” was written by Montana singer/songwriter, Stephanie Davis. It appeared on Garth Brooks’ 1992 holiday album, Beyond the Season. A young Canadian pop and Celtic music singer, Aselin Debison also recorded and released “The Gift” on Sweet is the Melody in 2002. Enjoy!

The Gift
Stephanie Davis

A poor orphan girl named Maria
Was walking to market one day
She stopped for a rest by the roadside
Where a bird with a broken wing lay
A few moments passed till she saw it
For its feathers were covered with sand
But soon clean and wrapped it was traveling
In the warmth of Maria’s small hand

She happily gave her last peso
On a cage made of rushes and twine
She fed it loose corn from the market
And watched it grow stronger with time

Now the Christmas Eve service was coming
And the church shone with tinsel and light
And all of the townfolks brought presents
To lay by the manger that night
There were diamonds and incense and perfumes
In packages fit for a king
But for one ragged bird in a small cage
Maria had nothing to bring

She waited till just before midnight
So no one would see her go in
And crying she knelt by the manger
For her gift was unworthy of Him

Then a voice spoke to her through the darkness
Maria, what brings you to me?
If the bird in the cage is your offering
Open the door and let me see
Though she trembled, she did as He asked her
And out of the cage the bird flew
Soaring up into the rafters
On a wing that had healed good as new

Just then the midnight bells rang out
And the little bird started to sing
A song that no words could recapture
Whose beauty was fit for a king

Now Maria felt blessed just to listen
To that cascade of notes sweet and long
As her offerings was lifted to Heaven
By the very first nightingale’s song

This ain’t just some neon love come lately…

October 8th, 2008

A hard-to-find country song got stuck in my head, but I could never remember enough of the lyrics to find it.

It started out, “We got married in high school…” and the only other lyrics I could remember were something about “love come lately…”

I finally found it! It is “Sacred Ground” by McBride and the Ride.

Sacred Ground
McBride and the Ride

We got married in high school
Had a baby when we turned eighteen
I bagged groceries in the daytime
At night I learned to fix TV’s

When you come by things the hard way
Well you learn how to hold on tight
So don’t think you can waltz in here
And take her without a fight

This ain’t just some neon love come lately
Its a precious thing you don’t know nothing about
We were joined in the eyes of the Lord
In the eyes of our hometown
Why don’t you leave her alone
You’re treading on sacred ground

Guess I took for granted
She would never look at someone else
Now I’ve got some patching up to do
Oh, and I don’t need your help

I know you’re the leavin’ kind
Well, I sure hope you will
Before she goes and burns those bridges
That took so long to build

This ain’t just some neon love come lately
Its a precious thing you don’t know nothin’ about
We were joined in the eyes of the Lord
In the eyes of our hometown
Why don’t you leave her alone
You’re treading on sacred ground
Go on and leave her alone
Why don’t you leave her alone
Go on and leave her alone
You’re treading on sacred ground
